Campaign Story

San Andrés Osuna is a village in Guatemala which was recently devastated by the Volcan de Fuego’s eruption in 2018.  Although its villagers were not direct victims to the eruption, access to the town has been completely obliterated, and the government of Guatemala is unwilling to mend the damaged infrastructure, due to the chances that the infrastructure might keep getting damaged due to volcano activity anyways.

The people of San Andrés Osuna have therefore been distanced from markets in Guatemala, and many livelihoods have been destroyed.  Where there used to be roads, now there are only rivers that heavy duty vehicles can cross.  In rainy season, not even pickups can cross without the risk of being dragged away by the heavy currents.  Ecoconomist therefore has made an alliance with the Municipality of Escuintla, where San Andrés is located, to try and finance an Aquaponic Fish Tank in the town of San Andrés Osuna.  The Municipality of Escuintla has already provided a location in the town, where Ecoconomist can go build an aquaponic fish tank in hopes of generating a new source of income for the town, which according to a study made by Olof Hörmander at Uppsala University, has a much greater potential cost-benefit margin of earnings, than most development projects run by large-scale NGOs.  It is estimated one of these systems could produce 1,600 pounds of fish per year and an average 6,400 pounds of vegetables, providing not only income for the communities, but also ecological, healthy diet.

A new public school was built and inaugurated in January of 2023, in San Andrés Osuna, which already has electricity, water and security guards at their disposal.  Ecoconomist has been given permission to build an aquaponic systems in this protected area, and hence, you can be a part of helping Ecoconomist raise funds to finance this project for the people in San Andrés Osuna.  The space provided by the Municipality of Escuintla is also large enough to house several more aquaponic fish tank projects, were the first one to be a success.  As it is stated by the research paper written by Olof Hörmander, economist and current President of Ecoconomist, the funding costs of one medium sized project has a total cost of US$ 5,700.  This could provide San Andrés Osuna with a pronosticated net income of US$ 1,800, per year, as is explored by the Olof’s paper, available below.
